This is what texts from My Cousin Bennett look like when he’s drunk at 6 am.
Know Your Enemy
This phrase can mean anything, from knowing them inside out, and being able to outsmart them because of it, or knowing exactly who they are. For the people following and participating in the Occupy Wall Street (or other major city) movement, it means the latter. From my understanding, this is an all encompassing movement, which is good. It is good to allow all ideas, people, and opinions to be heard. However it is incredibly, and I want to emphasize this, INCREDIBLY, important to keep it like this. To not let anyone hijack this movement. Any chance people have to discredit it by saying it has been taken over by militant anarchists, as the Boston branch has been accused of, or anyone else will be exploited to the fullest extent. Order is important, yes, however so is equality. No one person or idea is responsible for this movement, and no one person or idea should be able to ruin it from within.
Secondly, know who the enemy is. The enemy is NOT the police. If you are truly representative of the 99%, you should understand that your ideas will resonate with these men and women as well. Yes, they have a job to do, but if you are not attacking them or breaking any laws, they certainly will not attack you. Please, do not link me to any three minute YouTube clip that takes police wielding batons and using pepper spray and portrays it out of context. I’ve seen them. And in most, it appears as if a large crowd has converged on a few police officers. This is NOT the way to go about changing our system. The police will be with you in time, once this grows larger. This should be about non-violent, civil disobedience.
Non-violence is key. Anything will be used to discredit this movement. The actions of all involved will be scrutinized on microscopic levels. Do not ruin something that can be monumental by losing your cool.
This is not about marginalizing anyone. This is about changing a system that is broken and caters to the few instead of the many. We are rightfully angry at this, do not allow this anger to be directed at people who could possibly support your movement. We are the 99%, and there are A LOT of us. Of all ages, shapes, sizes, and professions.
